چکیده

Detailed information about the spatial distribution of subsurface properties is important in many fields. One method that can image the seismic velocity structure of the shallow subsurface is crosswell seismic tomography. By including rays traveling from the boreholes to the surface, the angular coverage of crosswell tomograms can be significantly improved. We investigated the effects of these borehole-to-surface rays on synthetic and field data. The tests on synthetic data showed that including borehole-tosurface information did not significantly change the tomogram’s resolution. Tomographic inversion of a field data set collected at the Boise Hydrogeophysical Research Site, however, showed that including borehole-to-surface information improves a tomogram’s ability to image layer boundaries, and improves the velocity estimates for slow layers. The tomogram generated using the crosswell and borehole-to-surface information is consistent with the previously interpreted hydrostratigraphic units at the site.

Report 9 Crosswell Imaging with Surface Sources and Tube Waves

Conventional crosswell surveys are expensive because a source must be placed downhole, which means that the hole must be prepped and placed off-line for a number of days. We suggest an interesting but unproven alternative: place a source on the surface, drop a simple obstruction-like device downhole that scatters tube wave arrivals from the surface source, and use the scattered tube waves energ...

Crosswell electromagnetic tomography: System design considerations and field results

Electrical conductivity is an important petroleum reservoir parameter because of its sensitivity to porosity, pore fluid type, and saturation. Although induction logs are widely used to obtain the conductivity near boreholes, the poor resolution offered by surfacebased electrical and electromagnetic (EM) field systems has thus far limited obtaining this information in the region between borehol...

Application of Near Surface Mounted (NSM) technique for Seismic Retrofitting of Heritage Buildings

The high vulnerability of the cultural buildings due to seismic actions urged researchers to retrofit them using reversible and compatible techniques. The application of fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) for enhancing the structural behavior of masonry buildings, under seismic actions, has been studied by many researchers. The near-surface mounting (NSM) technique is a relatively new retrofitting ...

Imaging Tree Roots with Borehole Radar

Ground-penetrating radar has been used to detect and map tree roots using surface-based antennas in reflection mode. On amenable soils these methods can accurately detect lateral tree roots. In some tree species (e.g. Pinus taeda, Pinus palustris), vertically orientated tap roots directly beneath the tree, comprise most of the root mass. It is difficult if not impossible to vertically delineate...

Extraction of Reflections from Tube Waves

Meng (1997) used the McConnell crosswell data to show that transmitted arrival traveltimes can be extracted from common receiver gathers (CRG) where the effective source is a tube wave generator. In this report I use the McElroy crosswell data to show that reflection events can be extracted from CRG’s where the effective source is a tube wave generator. This result opens the possibility that mo...
